Please find below links to various national statistical agencies which provide comprehensive data sets. Please note we have only included stats can because they are Canada’s statistical agency not because they are of very much use as a source for free statistics. Canadians get very little from their taxpayer funded agency compared to most other wealthy countries.

Canada

Statistics Canada-English
Statistics Canada-French
Stats Can provides a limited number of free series. Free detailed and historical statistics are generally not available. However, stats can does provide some historical series on the labour force, GDP, etc. These can be found here. Those connected with academic institutions can access the more detailed CANSIM database. This databank has plenty of historical data, but a lot of the “good data” is only available from 1976 on. If you are looking for free statistics on Canadian productivity and growth they can be had at the United States Bureau of Labour Statistics.

Industry Canada
Some useful trade statistics.

Human Resources and Development Canada
Good set of time series data on social and program spending for Canada and the provinces (1976-2003).

USA

There are several sources for free detailed historical time series data sets in the US.

Bureau of Labor Statistics
Also includes international comparative data sets

Bureau of Economic Analysis
Also includes international comparative data sets on FDI and BoP

Japan

Statisitics Bureau of Japan

EU

Eurostat
EU’s main statistical agency. Broad range of social and economic indicators.

  1. This is a great idea. I have added your blog to my blogroll.

I was just checking some of the links on a page (http://ca.geocities.com/forest_tracts/econ/econ.html) I put together years ago. A lot of dead links. But this one (http://www.helsinki.fi/WebEc/webecc8d.html) is still good and has lots of links to economic data that is available on the net.
