Key to the election: the inner Man-Child of the Suburban/Rural Male

Travis Fast

So it’s on: err umm the Canadian election that is…

If the conservatives are to be beaten the Liberals, the Bloc and the NDP are going to have to figure out how they can appeal to males between 45-64 years of age with high-school or some college education. According to the EKOS poll this is where Stephen Harper lives (suburban and rural). This is a hard group to appeal to for left of center, and centrist parties (although not so much for the Bloc: males seem to like nationalism). It is not like anyone would believe an image of Dion mounted on an ATV with a Molson Dry in the bevy holder and a chainsaw strapped to the back. Layton could pull it off but at the cost of alienating his hyper sensitive urban support.

  1. 1. Jack Layton must avoid wearing a speedo. Actually, avoid bareing his chest.

    2. Sounds sexist, but don’t show femininity. You are not going to be on Oprah.

    3. Go to donut shops. Remember that it is a priviledge to see men sitting at a table. It is not a priviledge for men to see Jack. Worship the men.

    4. It’s farm fair season. Shake lots of manly hands. Look at the bull riding events. Don’t show sympathy for the bull. Don’t ask for anything vegetarian.

    5. Don’t wear goofy outfits at farm fairs. Don’t even wear cowboy or farmer’s hats. It’s OK for the locals to wear them, but not Jack.

    6. Talk about the Blue Jays, CFL, and NHL sports teams. Don’t talk about soccer unless you are in Toronto. Even then, talk about non-Canadian soccer.

    7. Those men may have children ready to go to college or university. Talk about tuition.

    8. Chances are, those 45-64 year old men are probably working at least 8 hours per day or are retired. Don’t talk about the homeless or poor welfare moms around them. They won’t be sympathetic when they have worked hard to get where they are today. Jack can talk about those men’s struggles as their adult children go to university, but don’t talk about welfare moms in the presence of those men unless he knows how to spin the two together somehow.

    9. Say “middle class”–not “working class.”

    10. No skinny dipping. Leave that to me.

  2. What I find interesting is the deep disconnect between these guys and the rest of the population. They feel so persecuted even though they have enjoyed such success over the past 10 years. Kind of reminds me of white South Africans who left the country when being economically better off than 90 % of the population was not good enough. They still want their symbolic superiority. And at the end of the day I guess that is what Harper gives them.

  3. The two aims of the Party are to conquer the whole surface of the earth and to extinguish once and for all the possibility of independent thought. There are therefore two great problems which the Party is concerned to solve. One is how to discover, against his will, what another human being is thinking, and the other is how to kill several hundred million people in a few seconds without giving warning beforehand.GeorgeOrwellGeorge Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-Four

  4. If the goal (or just hope) of the election (at least for those to the left of the Cons) is to move HarperCo out of power, then it’d be easiest for the Libs to work on appearing sincere and remorseful about the “arrogance” that turfed them in the first place and ignore as much as possible that demographic.

But aren’t these also the guys who’ve slowly been losing ground (or at best losing ground more slowly)? While hardly persecuted, their masculinity’s being threatened by losing the ability to feed “their” families, their racial privilige is being challenged by good jobs heading out of Canada to foreign shores and such people as “uppity Indians” and immigrants who “steal” jobs. Harper’s ilk (if not HarperCo; the Libs certainly have much to answer for, as well as Rae’s NDP in ON) is the one who put them in this position, and there’s no shortage of idiotic ideas out there to be latched onto in desperation.
